England vs Sri Lanka 3rd Test, Day 1 Highlights: Ollie Pope returned to form on his Oval home ground with a first hundred as England captain on opening day of the third Test against Sri Lanka. Pope had managed a mere 30 runs in four previous innings since succeeding the injured Ben Stokes as skipper at the start of this series. But when bad light ended play for the day, Pope was a run-a-ball 103 not out, with England well-placed on 221-3. Sri Lanka, already 2-0 down in three-match series, failed to make the most of overcast conditions and a green-tinged pitch after captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss. (Scorecard)

England, on the other hand, will be a bit disappointed as they would have hoped for something near or over 400 after the start that they got. However, we have seen them collapse like this earlier in the summer as well. Ollie Pope was the mainstay for the hosts who notched up his 7th hundred in Tests and was absolutely fantastic out in the middle. Ben Duckett also showed his class with a fiery 86 just missing out on his ton. They were looking well set to post a huge total, but it went a bit downhill after the dismissal of Harry Brook. From 290/5, they were bowled out for 325, and the lower order was wrapped up in a blink of an eye. Pope's 154 can prove to be the difference between the two sides.

Sri Lanka wraps England up for 325 here! They have been pretty much on the money from the start of Day 2 and kept the pressure on the batters. After a forgettable Day 1 where they conceded 221 runs in just 45 overs of play, this has been a remarkable turnaround for them. The pacers did the job excellently here with Milan Rathnayake sitting on top with three wickets while Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara chipped in with a couple of wickets each. Asitha Fernando got one, but the skipper's decision to bring himself into the attack and introduce spin worked like a treat for them as Dhananjaya de Silva also ended up with two important wickets.

69.1WMilan Rathnayake to Shoaib Bashir
OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! A momentous collapse for England and Sri Lanka have managed to sneak back in the contest after a dismal outing on the first day. Milan Rathnayake bowls it on the back of a length, around off, it springs off the deck a bit and comes high on the batter. Shoaib Bashir clears his front leg and tries to play a wild heave across the line, but as the ball gets heavier on him, he ends up slicing it off the high end of the bat. The ball airs in the overcast skies, and swirls over the cover region. Lahiru Kumara there stationed at the covers takes the simplest of the catches. England have lost 6 wickets in the last 35 runs, and more importantly within the last 10 overs.

68.60Asitha Fernando to
Asitha follows the batter as Stone shuffles outside leg, pitches it outside leg and on the hard length, Olly Stone is cramped up for room and just about manages to tap it to the leg side.

68.56Asitha Fernando to
SIX! That's a bit streaky but they all count! Asitha Fernando bangs in a sharp bouncer and on middle, Olly Stone looks to pull it away but gets hurried, it goes off the top edge and flies over the keeper and goes all the way for a biggie.

Short on the leg stump, this is pulled to deep square for a single by Bashir. He gets off the mark.
-
68.30Asitha Fernando to Shoaib Bashir
Short and outside leg, Bashir goes for the pull and misses.
-
!
Shoaib Bashir is the last man in. This may be the last over before Lunch, but if a wicket does not fall here, the umpires will surely extend this session by at least half an hour or till the last wicket falls whichever is earlier.
-
68.2WAsitha Fernando to Josh Hull
OUT! TAKEN! England 9 down now and things have moved pretty rapidly after Brook's dismissal. Asitha Fernando too, gets a scalp to his name. He bangs it hard into the surface on the middle and leg channel, it skids and comes a bit quick off the surface. Josh Hull stands upright and reacts a bit late on the bounce. He goes through the pull shot but does not complete the bat flow and lobs it straight to Dhananjaya de Silva at square leg. A simple catch for DDS and Sri Lanka is just a solitary wicket away from wrapping things up.
