Onto the next one - India have taken the early lead in this three-match ODI series, the first-ever between the two nations, but there are still a couple of games to go, and Afghanistan will look to bounce back quickly. The 2nd ODI will be played on Wednesday, 17 June, in Lucknow. That game will begin at 8 am GMT (1.30 pm IST), but as usual, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. For now, there's still plenty of cricketing action going on, and you can switch tabs to catch our coverage of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup as well, where West Indies Women are about to take on New Zealand Women in the third and final game of the day. Cheers!
Player of the Match - The skipper of India, Shubman Gill, gets the award for a match-winning knock of 84 unbeaten runs, along with a stunning catch. Gill starts by saying that they did well to pull things back after Rahmanullah Gurbaz started to hit those shots. Adds that the wicket was brilliant to bat on, but there was a bit of grip for the Indian spinners and not enough of a grip when Afghanistan bowled. On his catch, he says that this was the first time that he's taken such a brilliant catch in international cricket. On the debutants, Gill applauds the way Gurnoor Brar bowled and even the way Harsh Dubey came back after conceding plenty of runs in his first over. Gill adds that the middle overs in ODIs are very crucial, and if you can rotate strike well and not lose too many wickets in that phase, you can set up the game nicely.
Let's hear from Afghanistan's captain - Hashmatullah Shahidi admits it was a tough game for them. He feels losing back-to-back wickets proved decisive. Shahidi reckons a total in the region of 220-230 would have been a good score. Opines they fell 30 runs short with the bat. Shahidi shares that he tried to target the left-arm spinner, particularly with the shorter boundary on the leg side, but it did not come off for him. He takes responsibility for the batting collapse as well, admitting that the slide began with his dismissal. Hashmatullah also feels the wicket was on the flatter side and believes they were not disciplined enough with the ball. Hopes to come back stronger in the next game.
The Presentation ceremony...
Right then, there's a drone show for the crowd to enjoy after the game, so stay tuned for the presentation ceremony.
What happened earlier? Right from the off, we were in for a delay, which turned out to be a really long one, as the irritating drizzle simply wouldn't let up. Finally, when the skies cleared, it stayed that way, and Afghanistan were asked to bat first by Shubman Gill. Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the fightback for the visitors after the Indian pacers reduced them to 26/3 inside the first 5 overs. Gurbaz went on to score a blistering ton, the fastest by an Afghan batter in ODIs, but apart from him, there wasn't much contribution from the others. As for India, the two debutants - Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar, both picked up three wickets each, and they managed to keep Afghanistan to under the 200-run mark.
Not enough opportunities created - Afghanistan had a decent score on the board, but in a 25-over-a-side contest, scoring at 8 runs an over, that too on a ground where T20 scores are generally in excess of 200 runs, was always going to be difficult to defend. They didn't begin all that well with the ball either, but the spinners did a good job through the middle overs, especially Rashid Khan. In the end, they simply didn't have enough runs on the board, and the lack of wicket-taking opportunities handed the Afghans a comprehensive defeat.
Skipper leading from the front - With almost 8 runs an over required right from the off, the Indian openers set the tone early on. Rohit Sharma was unfortunately run out, but Shubman Gill kicked on and played a fine, unbeaten knock of 84, staying on till the end. Ishan Kishan played some eye-catching shots once Rohit was dismissed and then KL Rahul just took the bowling apart at the death, finishing with an unbeaten 39 off just 19 balls.
India win a rain-marred contest - India reign supreme in this first match of the first-ever bilateral ODI series against Afghanistan, and they always looked in control in the chase. Afghanistan thought they had an outside chance but needed a few more wickets to make a real match out of it.

FOUR! KL Rahul manages to evade two fielders and finds the fence to seal the win. India win by 7 wickets to go 1-0 up in the series. Saleem takes pace off and goes fuller at the stumps. Rahul swings through the line of the ball. He is a bit early into the stroke and it is skied behind mid off. The mid off fielder turns around and goes after it. The long on fielder also converges, but the ball lands away from the reach of the two men. It bounces just in front of the long off fence and trickles into the boundary cushions.

Bump ball! Seam-up ball, very full, outside off. Rahul extends his hands to drive it through the off side. Gets an outside edge and it is taken behind by the keeper. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is up in an appeal and the umpire sends it upstairs. There was a deflection but the replays show that the ball went to the keeper on the bounce.
Is that a bump ball? Did seem like it, but the keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz wants to have a look. The umpire does go upstairs to be sure, as there seemed to be a definite edge on it. Replays confirm that the ball did go onto the ground after taking the edge. NOT OUT!

AM Ghazanfar To Rohit Sharma OUT!
OUT! ROHIT SHARMA IS RUN OUT! Oh, deary me, Rohit Sharma will feel he's been sold down the river by Shubman Gill here. AM Ghazanfar bowls it a tad fuller on leg stump. Sharma leans on, shows the full face of the bat and pushes it towards mid on, setting off for the single right away. Gill calls 'NO' loudly as he is a bit blocked by the bowler, but Sharma is very late to turn back, and Gill just turns back, watching the ball as well. Rashid Khan throws it towards the keeper, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz whips off the bails. Sharma's dive goes in vain.
A big mix-up, and Rohit Sharma has started to walk off even before the replays come up on the big screen. He is short despite the desperate dive, confirmed by the third umpire.
