Who Is D Gukesh? India's Grandmaster Eyeing World Chess Championship 2024

India's 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju could script chess history and become the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand to win the World Chess Championship crown since 2012, as he squares off against China's Ding Liren.

India's 18-year-old chess sensation D Gukesh is on the verge of scripting history for India, eyeing a first World Chess Championship crown since Viswanathan Anand in 2012.

Hailing from a Telugu family, Gukesh was born in Chennai, India on May 29, 2006. He picked up chess at the age of 7. He practised for one hour, three days a week.

At 12 years, 7 months and 17 days, Gukesh is the third-youngest Grandmaster of all time. At that age, Gukesh won five gold medals at the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Champions.

Gukesh announced himself to the world in 2023, becoming the youngest-ever player to reach a rating of 2750. He also ended Viswanathan Anand's 37-year reign as India's top-ranked chess star.

Gukesh helped India clinch its first-ever Chess Olympiad gold earlier in 2024. Winning the Candidates tournament the same year allowed him to participate in the World Chess Championship, against China's Ding Liren.
