As a replacement for Michael Vaughan, Andrew Strauss made his Test debut against New Zealand and made an excellent start by scoring 112 and 83 to star in an England win.

He was a key factor in England's 2-1 Ashes series win over Australia at home as he hit two centuries which were crucial against a bowling attack boasting the likes of Warne, McGrath and Lee.

In 2006 Strauss led England to a home series win over Pakistan, the series made infamous by the ball tampering controversy and Pakistan threatening to forfeit a Test match. However he was not retained as skipper.

2007 proved to be a downslide for Andrew Strauss as he failed to make substantial contributions to the team. He went without a century in seven Tests and was dropped towards the end of the year.

Napier gave him the opportunity to strike back when he scored a scintillating 177 against New Zealand to help England out of a sticky situation. It is regarded as one of his best innings.

Kevin Pietersen stepped down from the captaincy in 2009 and the mantle was passed to Andrew Strauss. He would now be in charge of a team that he would take to the top, his first success being winning back the Ashes from Australia the same year.

Controversy was not far behind though when Strauss was rested from the tour of Bangladesh in 2010 but it seemed to be a disciplinary measure from the selectors. A lot of unnecessary bad publicity came from it.

More glory was to come Strauss' way when he led England to their first Ashes series win Down Under after 24 years in 2010-11. The 3-1 win over Australia is without a doubt the highlight of his captaincy.

Andrew Strauss played his 100th Test at Lord's against South Africa in 2012. It would also be his last appearance for England as he announced his retirement based on his lack of form and also the brewing controversy with Kevin Pietersen, which he categorically denied though.
