MS Dhoni-led Indian team on Saturday wore a different look for the ODI series decider against New Zealand in Vishakhapatnam. In place of surnames, the cricketers' jerseys bore the name of their mothers.
This initiative was taken to salute the sacrifice all mothers have done over the years to give her child a prosperous future.
"It's an initiative to appreciate the contribution of the mothers. If you ask me, it was always about how emotionally connected I was to my mom. It's not like the dads are not there, they're there, but just that we often don't appreciate mothers role in a way we should do," said Dhoni, whose jersey displayed his mother's name Devaki.
"It's good that it has been put on a public platform. But I would request the whole of India one thing. Often we talk about soldiers and get patriotic before 26th January or 15th August. What's important is get up everyday and thank them for what they are doing. We need to appreciate mothers' role the same way."
Dhoni, who hails from Ranchi, was supported by his family through thick and thin, especially his mother to pursue his passion despite coming from a humble backgorund.
