IPL spot-fixing: Gurunath Meiyappan admits to betting, says report

Board of Control for Cricket in India chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan has reportedly admitted to betting in the Indian Premier League. Last month, the Chennai Super Kings team official was indicted for betting and sharing team information by an inquiry committee formed by the Supreme Court. The report, submitted by a three-member panel headed by retired Justice Mukul Mudgal, is scheduled for hearing in the apex court on Friday.

Meiyappna, who was chargesheeted by the Mumbai police and even spent time in jail last year, had refused to depose before the Mudgal committee saying the case was sub-judice. The probe committee had spoken to officials, players, journalists and administrators associated with the IPL.

A report on a whorl of malpractices, including spot-fixing and betting, was submitted on February 10 to the Supreme Court by the Mudgal committee. Mudgal was appointed to investigate the scandal after an internal probe ordered by the BCCI cleared Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra of corruption charges.

Justice Mudgal's report said allegations of betting against Meiyappan stand proven. Meiyappan was accused of passing information to bookies and placing bets on IPL matches. Meiyappan was a team principal of two-time IPL champions CSK, which is owned by Srinivasan, a man who has headed the BCCI since 2011.
