Situated at Dunedin in New Zealand, this ground is termed as the ‘House of Pain' due to its long reputation of difficult conditions for visiting teams. The weather in this part of New Zealand gets so cold, that teams are jocularly said to “freeze up” on a cold Dunedin day, as was said to happen to India during the 1992 World Cup against the hosts. The first Test match played at this stadium was between New Zealand and England in 1955. The stadium which also plays host to local rugby events can host 30,000 people and has witnessed some of New Zealand's great historic matches in the past. In the early days of the grounds, the outfield was rough and not conducive for playing conditions. But after that responsibility passed on to the control of the Otago Rugby Football Union, proper drainage facilities were implemented and the surface of the ground was re-laid. Commonly known as ‘The Brook' this ground, located at the foothill of The Glen, a steep valley, can cater to both day and night games with good, adequate lighting systems. The stadium is undergoing renovation and when completed will be New Zealand's only fully covered stadium.
