Sri Lanka ease past West Indies by 39 runs

Sri Lanka beat the West Indies by 39 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in the fifth match of the Tri-Nation Series. The islanders failed to get a bonus point however, meaning all three teams are in contention for a finals berth.

Only 19 overs were possible on Sunday with rain hampering the match. Sri Lanka resumed their innings on Monday at 60 for three. There were a couple more rain interruptions on Monday as well.

Lahiru Thirimanne struggled for 78 balls, making just 23. He was finally put out of misery by Marlon Samuels.

Kemar Roach was the pick of the West Indian bowlers, ending with figures of 4/27 in his 8 overs.

Man of the Match Kumar Sangakkara though stole the show. He started slowly but ended with an exquisite 95-ball 90, with six boundaries and one six.

Sri Lanka suffered a big blow as Nuwan Kulasekara split his webbing while attempting a catch. Kula has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.

Shaminda Eranga was excellent with the new ball, taking the wickets of Johnson Charles and Marlon Samuels in the same over. He finished with 3/46 in 8 overs.

Angelo Mathews gave a skippers performance in the match. He scored a valuable 30 with the bat and picked 4/29 in 8 overs with the ball.

After losing four early wickets, Lendl Simmons came to the crease. He played a handy knock of 67 before falling as the rain appeared.

Simmons, along with Darren Bravo, put on 123 runs for the fifth wicket. Bravo scored 70 before falling during the latter stages of the match.

Lasith Malinga was excellent in the final few overs of the match. 'Slinga' ended with 2/42, picking the crucial wickets of Darren Sammy and Kieron Pollard.
