We are all set for the run chase. The umpires are out on the field. The Aussies are seen in a huddle along the boundary line taking some final instructions before walking out on the field to take their respective positions.
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Right then, that is it from the first innings and it was an exciting one as expected. The Aussies were off to a great start and were looking to breach the 400-run mark but a complete bowling effort by the Indians managed to restrict the Aussies to just over 350. Apart from the top 4, none of the batters could keep the momentum going and runs coming. The target for India is 353 and they have to chase it in 50 overs. Will Australia defend the target or will India pull off the highest run chase on this ground? It will be an interesting chase where all questions will be answered. So grab a cup of coffee and join us in a while for the exciting run chase.
Mitchell Marsh is in for a chat. He starts by saying that these are probably the hottest conditions he has batted in. Mentions that it is a beautiful wicket and hopes to defend the total. Shares that after assessing the conditions quickly, it was important to get as many as possible in the powerplay. Credits David Warner for the way he batted. Feels that it would have been nice to get a hundred but the kind of platform they set was the way they wanted to bat. Reckons that it was tough to bat as the ball got softer and the change of pace worked as well. Feels that we are in for an exciting chase.
The Indians started off their bowling innings really poorly and got hit all around the ground in the opening overs. Prasidh Krishna gave them the first breakthrough after dismissing Warner and giving some hope to his team. The next strong partnership was broken by the spinner Kuldeep Yadav who dismissed the dangerous-looking Marsh before he could reach his century. Not taking timely wickets in the middle phases allowed the Aussies to build strong partnerships but after Mohammed Siraj trapped Smith in front of the stumps, the wickets kept coming in regular intervals. The pressure was not completely off until Marnus Labuschagne was on the crease and the job of dismissing him was completed by the star speedster, Jasprit Bumrah. A good bowling effort towards the end by the Indians managed to keep the Aussies from reaching 400 which was looking very near from the way they were batting. The target for India now is 353 runs and it will be the highest chase on this ground.
After Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, they got off to a great start thanks to the explosive opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. They both took apart the Indian bowling attack in the opening phases. Warner was the first batter to depart which brought in Steven Smith. He also complemented Marsh and built a strong partnership with him. They both managed to reach their half-centuries with Marsh departing when he was just short of a century. Marnus Labuschagne was the next batter in and he also batted well. Smith was dismissed after scoring 74 runs. After that none of the batters could keep the momentum going and wickets kept falling on the other end. Marnus Labuschagne was still going strong but he too fell under pressure after scoring a good 72 runs. The Aussies had to press pause on their momentum towards the end as wickets were falling quickly. At one point in the innings they were looking to cross 400 but now they have to be content with 352 on the board.
A good comeback from India towards the middle and the end of the innings. They managed to restrict the Aussies to a score of 352, thanks to a good bowling effort and the captaincy of Rohit Sharma who managed his bowlers well. Mitchell Marsh was the top scorer for Australia and Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker for the Men in Blue as he took 3 wickets. A very eventful first innings comes to an end as Australia registers the highest score on this ground.
