Kiev: Ukraine is talks with former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson about the Swede taking on the vacant job as coach of the national team, his representative and the Ukrainian Football Federation said.

Ukraine's Football Federation said it now has a five-person shortlist for the job and its vice-president Anatoliy Popov confirmed that Eriksson's name was on the list.

Eriksson's representative, Carlos Carvalho, said the trainer was in talks with the Ukrainian federation and wanted to take charge of the team going into the 2014 World Cup.

"At the moment we are at the stage of active talks. The conditions put forward (by the Ukrainian side) do not fulfil our expectations. We will look for a compromise," he said, without elaborating.

The owner of Ukraine's top side Shakhtar Donetsk, the billionaire industrial tycoon Rinat Akhmetov, has said he is ready to help pay the new trainer's wages out of his own funds.

Eriksson coached England during a relatively successful period from 2001-2006.

Ukraine is scouring the football world for a new coach after outgoing manager Oleg Blokhin announced he was taking over Dynamo Kiev and recently retired striker Andriy Shevchenko said he was not ready for the job.

Ukraine held talks with representatives of former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp but the Englishman then took over at struggling Queens Park Rangers.

Ukraine are playing in a relatively tough World Cup qualifying group including Eriksson's old team England as well as Montenegro, Poland, Moldova and minnows San Marino.
