Berg, 43, won the Premier League title with Blackburn as a player in the 1994-95 season before going on to join Manchester United.

Following intense speculation about Berg's appointment, Blackburn announced a press conference scheduled for Thursday morning before confirming on their official Twitter account that the Norwegian would indeed be joining the club.

"Blackburn can confirm that Henning Berg has accepted the role of manager," read a statement on Blackburn's Twitter feed.

Berg made 297 appearances in two spells as a player with Rovers and is set to take up his first coaching role in England, after previous spells with Lyn Oslo and Lillestrom in his native Norway.

He will have to swallow his pride to take up the role with Blackburn, however, having strongly criticised the club's owners while working as a television pundit for Norwegian broadcaster TV 2 Sporten during the summer.

"There are no real managers with credibility who would accept a job like that," he said -- a remark that has been circulated widely in the British media this week.

Blackburn, owned by Indian poultry firm Venky's, were relegated from the English top flight at the end of last season and currently lie fifth in the second-tier Championship.

The unpopular Kean stepped down from his role as head coach last month after 21 months in charge, with Eric Black taking over on a caretaker basis.
