Hashim Amla (81) top-scored in South Africa's 234 for nine, and was given the Man of the Match award. Amla's average of 56.44 while aggregating 3566 in 71 matches is the highest by any batsman in ODIs (minimum qualification: 3000 runs).

Amla's innings was even more crucial when put in to context with South Africa's next highest score of the innings - AB de Villiers' 31.

Standing over seven-feet tall, Mohammad Irfan ended with figures of 1/27 in 7 overs. Irfan was responsible for the wicket of opener Colin Ingram.

At one stage Nasir Jamshed looked like the man to take Pakistan to the target of 235. However he lofted a catch back to the bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe, diminishing Pakistani hopes.

In their defeat to West Indies, Misbah-ul-haq scored 96 in a losing cause. It happened yet again in Edgbaston as Misbah struck 55, but Pakistan lost by 67 runs.

Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Ryan McLaren were the stars with the ball for South Africa finishing with figures of 2/23 and 4/19 respectively.

With the result, Pakistan's hopes of making the final four all but evaporated while South Africa control their own destiny in their final league game against West Indies.
