Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has admitted that he has been stumped by modern-day batters' ability to adapt to red-ball cricket. Manjrekar said it is a mystery how the IPL generation has managed to transition from T20s to Test cricket, calling it an impressive feat. His remark came amid the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, with the likes of Devdutt Padikkal and Manav Suthar delivering standout performances during India's win in the Galle Test earlier this week.

He compared the transition of modern-day cricketers to classical singers attempting to perform classical ragas.

"Modern pop singers, if they are asked to do classical singing, ragas, then it will be very difficult. But these people are doing that. It is a mystery to me that the generation of IPL, the generation of T20, how do they play such good Test cricket? In both game of ball and game of gain," Manjrekar said on Doordarshan.

Manjrekar suggested that such adaptability is commendable, given the vastly different demands of T20 and red-ball cricket.

"More in case of batting, because there is a lot of difference between T20 batting and Test batting," he added.

Padikkal was India's standout performer with the bat in Galle, as he amassed 211 runs across the two innings, including a century.

Roped into the playing XI after India's regular no. 3 Sai Sudharsan was ruled out due to an injury, Padikkal smashed a career-best 167 in the first innings, which ensured India held complete control of the match.

A crucial second-innings 44 from the Karnataka batter's willow helped India get a bigger lead over Sri Lanka.

If Padikkal laid the base for India's victory with the bat, a classical Suthar used his subtle changes in pace and variations to ensure Sri Lanka never recovered from the big strikes made by him.

His match figures of 4-76 and 6-55 helped him outshine a star-studded spin attack featuring Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.
