The Games of the XXXI Olympiad will officially begin tonight (Saturday morning) at Maracana soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The first ever Olympic Games in South America will run till August 21. Day 1 of Rio Olympics 2016 schedule will include archery, women's football and the opening ceremony.ÂÂ
Some 50,000 spectators are expected while more than 3 billion people tune in around the world as Brazil hosts their second major sporting event in two years, after the 2014 soccer World Cup.
The Olympic Games 2016 started with the women's football competition on August 3. Archery will be the second sport that gets under way on Day 1 at Sambodromo.
India's medal hopes in Olympics Games 2016 are high in the archery competition. With several top-notch archers, including Deepika Kumari in their squad, India will aim to overturn their poor performance in the London Olympics in 2012. Archers will miss the opening ceremony march-past.
Archery action starts at 5:30 PM IST with the men's individual ranking round. A good finish will earn a favourable draw. Atanu Das will be India's lone ranger here in a field of 64 archers. India don't have a representation in the men's team ranking round.
The women's individual ranking rounds start at 9:30 PM IST. India have three archers here - Deepika, debutant Laxmirani Majhi and Laishram Bombayla Devi, competing in her third straight Olympics. The women's troika will also be in fray in the women's team ranking rounds.
