Tom Brady is a man who has been making news in the NFL for many years now, but the seven-time winner of Super Bowl is now planning to prove wrong one of those stereotypes that don't apply to him. Brady, formerly the quarterback of the New England Patriots, rejects any claims regarding him being responsible for the growing trend of NFL players clashing with referees. In an interview with FOX Sports, Brady discussed safeguarding his image as he recalled the disappointing loss in the 2008 Super Bowl game against the New York Giants.
Tom Brady denies starting the NFL's referee complaints trend
During FOX Sports' #AskTom segment, Brady responded to fans who believe his on-field reactions helped encourage today's players to challenge officials.
“Listen, I never cried to the refs. Don't talk (expletive) to me because I got the microphone and I can talk back,” Brady said.
The former quarterback's comment was made in the context of Super Bowl XLII, where the Patriots lost 17-14 against the Giants after going into the game undefeated for the entire year.
Brady remembered the famous “David Tyree Helmet Catch,” which proved to be an extremely important play that kept New York's championship effort alive. Eli Manning, the quarterback of the Giants, was able to evade pressure and throw the ball to David Tyree who caught it against his helmet while Rodney Harrison was defending him.
It became one of the worst moments for Brady. “The catch on the field has been confirmed on the David Tyree catch. That was the worst, worst thing I could have ever imagined,” Brady said.
He also referred to what he believed was a missed holding penalty involving Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour. “I don't want to bring that up right now. It's still a little sore subject,” he said.
The Giants' victory ended New England's bid for a perfect season, leaving Brady with a loss that remained painful years later.
Tom Brady's broadcasting role limits his criticism of NFL officials
Brady gives his opinion regarding refereeing controversies. Brady, who is the leading NFL commentator for FOX Sports, can make his concerns heard while covering the games, however, being one of the minority owners of the Las Vegas Raiders, he has to abide by the league regulations regarding what he can tell.
NFL does not want him to make any controversial remarks about the integrity of referees.
It was seen in 2024, when Brady made some remarks about the ejection of Brian Branch, the Green Bay Packers player, the safety of the Detroit Lions, following a helmet to helmet collision. The NFL discussed Brady's comments but did not take any measures against him.
Besides, 2026 has been marked with some arguments between players and referees as well.
Brady shows his attitude in recent comments regarding not taking responsibility for things that he does not like. Brady, despite having no helmet, has much to say about that.
