Patrick Mahomes has provided the Kansas City Chiefs with yet another reason to be optimistic about the current season. Having suffered from some severe knee injuries in the past, he managed to come back and take the Kansas City Chiefs all the way to 4-0 record in 2026. However, not only did he come back on the field but also enhanced one aspect of his game. According to ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell, Patrick Mahomes became more precise with deep throws while retaining his creativity as well.

In the new season, Mahomes had lots of questions to answer due to the fact that he was recovering from an ACL tear as well as LCL damage. He has now answered a lot of these doubts by leading the team to win their first four games while performing well himself.

Barnwell has mentioned Mahomes among his NFL quarter-season awards in Week 4. He awarded the quarterback the Comeback Player of the Year Award for his performance since coming back from his injury.

In his assessment, Barnwell wrote that Mahomes has "returned from a torn ACL and looked, frankly, better than the guy we saw over the past few years."

The analyst also noted the significance of Kansas City's enhanced offensive performance, especially with the addition of running back Kenneth Walker III. Nevertheless, he feels that Mahomes is definitely a better player now.

He adds, "The addition of Kenneth Walker III has gone a long way, but Mahomes has been more accurate as a deep passer while retaining his ability to throw off platform like nobody else in football."

Chiefs rely on Mahomes as unbeaten start raises expectations

In just four games, Mahomes has thrown for 1,037 yards, scored nine touchdowns and has two interceptions. This is an indication of a fruitful beginning for a player making a comeback after a major injury.

With Walker's acquisition, the offense of the team now has one more avenue to explore when on the ground. A better running game will help stretch the defences and give Mahomes a chance to throw his passes further downfield.

But there is still time in the season for Kansas City to take advantage of the quarterback's continued precision as well as protect their vulnerable knee against any unnecessary mistakes.

What Kansas City has achieved has been on the basis of the skillset and talent of Mahomes being able to execute plays with seeming ease. Based on Barnwell's predictions, it looks like he could come back with an improved passing game rather than his old one.

This would give the Chiefs an even brighter outlook for the season.
