Lane Johnson is retiring in the middle of the season, and the Philadelphia Eagles have little time to adjust. The 36-year-old right tackle announced his decision on Tuesday after 14 seasons with the team. He had been a late scratch for the Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams because of personal reasons. In August, Johnson said this year would probably be his last. Few expected him to leave before it ended. Now the Eagles must fill one of the most important spots on their offensive line, and a rookie is the likely answer.

Johnson did not hide behind vague language. He said his personal and family priorities have changed, even though he wanted to finish the season. He also said it is critical right now that he focus on his mental health. Then he added, “my heart is telling me that it's time to say goodbye to football.” That is not a player chasing one more season. He signed an extension through 2027 in March 2025, and he is leaving that deal behind.

On the field, one number tells much of the story. NBC Sports Philadelphia lists the Eagles at 15-29 without Johnson in recent seasons. A tackle's value often shows up in what does not happen, like a rushed throw or a collapsed pocket. Philadelphia got an unwelcome preview last year. Johnson missed the final eight games of 2025 with a foot injury, and the offense finished a poor season with a wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Who replaces Lane Johnson at right tackle for the Eagles?

The most likely answer is Markel Bell. The Eagles picked the Miami tackle in the third round this year, and he took plenty of first-team reps in camp. Johnson praised him and endorsed him as a future replacement. Still, there is a big gap between camp snaps and blocking NFL pass rushers every Sunday, especially in the middle of a season. Bell will learn fast or the Eagles will feel it.

The bigger worry is the group around him. The Eagles may soon have an offensive line that looks very different from the one that won Super Bowl LIX. Chemistry up front takes time, and the schedule will not wait.

Johnson leaves behind a long résumé. Philadelphia took him fourth overall out of Oklahoma in 2013. He went on to make six Pro Bowls, earn first-team All-Pro honors in 2017 and 2022, and win two Super Bowls. Owner Jeffrey Lurie called him “an all-time Eagle.” Head coach Nick Sirianni said last September that Johnson was “the best player I've ever been around.”

His impact reached beyond football. Johnson took a leave of absence in 2021 while dealing with anxiety and depression, and he has since shared his story at mental health clinics in the Philadelphia area. Now the Eagles have to find out, in real games, whether Bell is ready.
