Never Thought I Would Win a Wimbledon Title, Sumit Nagal Tells NDTV

Sumit Nagal entered the history books as only the sixth Indian to win a Grand Slam junior title after winning the boys doubles trophy at the Wimbledon championships. The 17-year-old said he had never imagined doing anything like this before and appeared relieved after a grueling title clash.

"It's a fabulous feeling to win a Wimbledon title. It's one of the biggest and one of the oldest tournaments, so it's great to win this. I never thought I would do anything like this ever," Nagal told NDTV. "It doesn't matter if it's singles or doubles, I'm glad I won it."

Nagal is also aware of the elite list of Indians with Grand Slam junior titles under their belts. "Coming from such a big country like India, it's even more special," he told NDTV.

So, what was going on in his mind during the final? "I was just thinking of who would get to hold the cup - I was thinking - Are we going to kiss it or not? I am just glad it's over," Nagal said.

Nagal and his eighth seed Vietnamese partner Nam Hoang Ly overcame fourth seeds Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan 7 -6(4) 6-4 in the title clash.

Nagal joined forces with Leander Paes and Sania Mirza to make this India's best ever Wimbledon campaign. While Mirza won the women's doubles title with Martina Hingis on Saturday, Paes paired up with the Swiss legend again to take the mixed doubles championship on Sunday. Yuki Bhambri was the last Indian to taste success at the top level in junior tennis when he won the Australian Open boys singles title in 2009.

Ramanathan Krishnan (Wimbledon, 1954), Ramesh Krishnan (French Open and Wimbledon, 1979) and Paes (Wimbledon 1990, U.S. Open 1991) are the other junior Grand Slam singles champions from India.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nagal and said his victory was heartening.

"It was very heartening to see Sumit Nagal win at @Wimbledon. Congrats & best wishes to this young sportsman," Modi tweeted on Monday.
