Before the 23rd over of the Champions Trophy semi-final vs Sri Lanka, Mahendra Singh Dhoni handed his wicket keeping gloves and pads to Dinesh Karthik. He warmed up during Jadeja's 6 balls and went on to bowl his medium-pace in the 24th over of the match.
Dhoni bowled for only the second time in his ODI career. His previous was at the 2009 edition of the Champions Trophy, when he finished with figures of 1/14 in two overs - claiming the wicket of Travis Dowlin.
Dhoni almost had the prize wicket of Mahela Jayawardene as well. The Lankan was given leg-before wicket on Dhoni's second ball but the decision was overturned on review, due to an inside-edge.
Wicket or no wicket, the capacity crowd at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff were on their feet throughout Dhoni's spell.
Dhoni finished with economical figures of 0/17 in 4 overs, as India restricted Sri Lanka to a paltry 181/8. We may never know why MS Dhoni turned to the leather, but he can add another skill to his cricketing repertoire.
