New Delhi:
Mohun Bagan missing regular goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee and defenders Peter Odafe and Habibur Rehman Mondal -- all suffering from injuries -- leaked goals while the absence of Jose Barreto was felt upfront at the King Abdullah Stadium last night.
Defender NS Manju started it all scoring an own goal in the 28th minute. Issa Al Sapah (29th, 40th) then pumped in two more before Hasan Abdel-Fattah (67th) converted a penalty and Rafat Ali (85th) completed the rout.
Already out of contention for a quarter-final berth, Mohun Bagan were playing for pride but all that the Bhaichung Bhutia-led side could do was concede one less than the 0-6 pounding they received at the hands of Kuwait SC at home on April 21.
The green-and-maroons have one match remaining in their campaign against Al Karamah of Syria in Howrah on May 19.
Al Wehdat showed their attacking intentions right from the start and should have opened scoring after two minutes but Amer Deeb shot wide after being fed by Amer Abuhwati.
The Jordanian side went ahead in 28th minute when Deeb crossed from the right and Manju diverted it into his own net.
The home side doubled their advantage barely a minute later when Abuhwati launched a quick attack before passing to Al Sapah, who broke into the area and scored with a powerful close-range shot.
Al Sapah then scored his second goal of the game and the third for Al Wehdat five minutes before the break when he took advantage of a defensive lapse.
Al Wehdat continued the second half as the dominant side and should have scored their fourth goal six minutes after the break when Al Sapah fired over the crossbar.
But their fourth duly arrived in the 67th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Rafat Ali was fouled inside the area and Abdel-Fattah successfully converted the penalty.
With four goals up, Al Wehdat took their foot off the pedal but they still managed to add a fifth five minutes before the end when Ali volleyed home.
Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa said his depleted side played well under difficult circumstances.
"We knew it would be hard against Al Wehdat. We have left our four key players due to injuries while we played with four new young players," he said.
