London:
Arsenal began the defense of its English title with a 4-1 win at Everton today, making it 41 straight games without a loss in the league.
Dennis Bergkamp, Jose Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires scored for Arsenal, which had 26 wins and 12 draws in the Premier League last season to finish well ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively.
The last top-division English team to go unbeaten in a single season was Preston in 1888-89.
Arsenal can tie Nottingham Forest's record of 42 consecutive games without defeat - set in 1977-78 and 1978-79 - next week against Middlesbrough.
Lee Casley scored for Everton, only after the Gunners took a 3-0 lead.
Bergkamp opened the scoring in the 23rd minute from a typical Arsenal counterattack. Reyes made a brilliant run through midfield, the ball fell to striker Thierry Henry, and he passed to the veteran Dutchman in the box.
Bergkamp took his time and beat Nigel Martyn through the legs.
Reyes made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, heading home a Ljungberg cross as three Everton defenders watched.
There was more good interplay for the third in the 54th minute.
Ljungberg tapped in Henry's low cross after Bergkamp's pass began the move.
Carsley slid the ball past Jens Lehmann in the 64th minute before Pires' effort in the 82nd. (AP)
