The Supreme Court will resume hearing arguments as the IPL 2013 corruption case enters its sixth week after the Mukul Mudgal probe panel submitted its final report to a special bench on November 3.
On Monday, the judges will hear former BCCI president I.S. Bindra's counsel, who is expected to press charges against suspended Board chief N. Srinivasan. The pressure to step aside from the BCCI is mounting by the day on N. Srinivasan, who is facing conflict of interest issues since his company India Cements owns former IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings. Srinivasan has virtually grabbed the entire spotlight in this almost 18-month long case. Did he do enough to stop his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan from betting and sharing team information? Meiyappan has been indicted by the probe panel for betting and has also been established as a CSK official. Srinivasan and India Cements are now trying to distance themselves from Meiyappan. Srinivasan is desperate for another term as BCCI president. The Board's annual general meeting and elections are in limbo and the top court is expected to give proper orders this week. Can Srinivasan contest? That is the million dollar question. The court wants tainted officials out of cricket administration but is yet to give a definite order. Bindra's entry may further queer the pitch for Srinivasan. (Srinivasan Asks for Supreme Court Nod)
Still grappling with the IPL scam case, the Supreme Court on December 10 deferred the BCCI president's election till the end of January even as the cricket board opposed constitution of an external high-powered committee to propose punishment on the Mudgal Committee findings. A bench headed by Justice TS Thakur also posed questions like should the actions of Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra lead to cancellation of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). (India Cements Shares Sink)
The decisions the Bench, also comprising Justice FMI Kalifulla said, has to give, will be on several issues arising out of IPL 6 betting and spot-fixing, including the conflict of interest involving N. Srinivasan, BCCI president-in-exile, will take more time.
