A well-directed one by Starc. Fearsome pace. Stoneman tries fending at it and in the process his bottom hand comes off the handle. There is some noise as it flies behind to Paine. He catches it with a jump, they appeal but the umpire shakes his head. Now, Steven Smith goes for the DRS and the replays roll in. There is nothing on the Hot Spot but the Snicko shows some spike. But it's not conclusive whether it came after hitting the bottom hand or the top. The third umpire watched just one angle and requested umpire Marais Erasmus to change his decision. Stoneman walks back to the pavilion. The English players in the dressing room are not looking too pleased with the call. There was a shade of doubt. If that deflection was off the bottom hand which was off the bat handle, it cannot be termed out. A controversial moment.  131/4

Ends up getting the faintest of nicks to Paine who doesn't miss such chances. Know a thing or two about earning your scalp? This is it. Hazlewood had bowled three consecutive maidens prior to this, just a couple of leg byes had come off them. Post that, Vince was the man facing the remaining deliveries. The batter had been watchful so far but his concentration gave way at the wrong time for England, who are rocked just before the break now. The 63-run stand that looked so promising is a thing of the past now. The timing of this dismissal won't please the visitors one bit.  89/2

It angles down after pitching and Root tries glancing it off his hips. He fails to middle his shot and gets it away off the bottom of the gloves. Paine makes no mistake behind the stumps and they all go up in a huge appeal. The finger goes up immediately and Joe takes a long walk back to the hut. Cummins hunts down England's premier batsman for the third time in the series. Making him his bunny.  115/3

106.5 OUT! STUNNING DIVING CATCH! Peter Handscomb, take a bow! Australia needed something special to break this partnership and it has arrived in the form of a special catch by the substitute fielder. Lyon with the breakthrough here. He serves a flighted ball around off, getting it to spin away a shade after kissing the turf. Malan steps out and tries to flick it over the leg side but it turns away to gather the leading edge. It balloons in the air and Handscomb moves across swiftly to his left from backward point to grab a stupendous diving catch. The Australian crowd finally gets the opportunity to make some noise. The hosts would like to capitalize from here on. Dawid Malan walks back to a warm ovation, top knock by the 30-year old.  368/5

111.2 OUT! England are falling like nine pins, have now lost 4 for 21! Starc spears in a fuller length ball on middle, a late bit of swing on that one as Bairstow tries whipping it across the line. But he gets a thick inside edge which destroys his stumps. Jonny was bowled in a similar fashion by Starc in Adelaide as well, only difference is that he has a century to his name this time. The hosts will be relieved with this breakthrough as Jonny possesses the ability to score quick runs towards the end. Can Australia stop England before 400?  389/8

107.2 OUT! Moeen gone for a duck! All of a sudden, Australia have made a comeback in this game. Cummins softens Moeen with a bouncer on the previous delivery and that did all the trick for him. Follows it up with a length ball outside off, angling in from wide of the crease, Moeen is caught on the back foot (expecting another bouncer) and has a tame push inside the line at the last moment. The extra bounce from that length takes his gloves and flies behind to Steven Smith at second slip who accepts it gleefully.  372/6

110.5 OUT! Another wicket goes down in quick time and Australia are enjoying a great passage of play since the drinks break. This wicket is the result of hitting the shot too well. A back of a length delivery on middle and leg, angling down, Woakes shuffles across in an attempt to glance it off his hips for probably a single. But he middles it so well that it flies all the way down to fine leg where Pat Cummins grabs the catch diving forward. The short ball ploy keeps on working for Australia.  389/7

113 OUT! The short-ball ploy is working big time for the Aussies. Another one bites the dust here. Hazlewood bangs it short on the stumps, Overton, the tailender that he is, gets into a tangle as he deals with it. He looks to walk across and work it on the on side but the bounce gets to him. The ball lobs off his gloves straight into the waiting hands of Bancroft at short leg. The end looks nigh for England.  393/9

115.1 OUT! What was that? For a moment we thought Broad has hit that for a boundary to fine leg but no, that's not the case. He is caught at short leg. Starc speeds in and bangs in a short ball around leg, angling across the left hander from round the wicket. Broad jumps across the stumps and tries to pull it down towards fine leg. But he gets a top edge which loops up and falls down into the safe hands of Bancroft. That will be it, England are bowled out for 403!  403/10

17.2 OUT! No inside edge and Cameron Bancroft gets the walking orders. A really good review by England. Overton with his second wicket and he is turning on the heat. He dishes out an inswinger around off, fuller in length, Bancroft tries playing it down the ground, probably towards mid on as his bat's face suggests. But he fails to middle his shot and is rapped on the pads. The English players appeal vociferously, there are two noises, but the umpire remains unmoved. Craig Overton is quite convinced and Joe Root goes with his bowler. He takes the DRS and the replays show that impact is in line, no inside edge and it's hitting the stumps. The noise there was of the bat hitting the front pad. Both the Aussie openers are now back in the hut. Excellent bowling by the young man.  55/2

13.2 OUT! Overton hunts down the big fish! The WACA lover is out cheaply. It's a length delivery angling in to the batsman, Warner has his weight on the back foot but feels the need to play the trajectory. However, the ball holds its line to grab the outside edge. Jonny Bairstow makes no mistake and the English boys are delighted. Neither forward nor back and more often than not, you edge those. The drinks break has done the trick for the visiting team. A disappointed Warner heads back to the pavilion.  44/1

51.1 OUT! Umpire's call, it's clipping the bails. Finally some success for England as they manage to break the 124-run stand. Woakes gets a length ball to cut back into the batsman from outside off. Usman tries to defend it from the crease by going on his toes but he misses. He is hit high on the back pad, they appeal and the finger goes up after some delay. Khawaja looks at his skipper and then decides to review it. The replays roll in and there is a little confusion initially regarding the inside edge. The Snicko is showing some spike but it ain't conclusive. There is nothing on the Hot Spot though and it's enough for the third umpire to head forward. Hawk Eye takes the centre stage now. It shows that the impact is umpire's call and it is going on to hit the top of the bails. The on-field call stays and a dejected Khawaja walks back immediately after scoring a half century. Australia don't lose the review though, they trail by 224 runs.  179/3

156.1 OUT! Stop the press, Steven Smith is gone! The on-field decision is overturned and Anderson gets his second wicket of the morning. Once again it's a delivery angling back into the batsman. Steven Smith stays back to work it around the corner but misses to get hit on the back leg. They appeal but the umpire shakes his head. James Anderson and Joe Root get together and opt for the review. Both don't look convinced though. The replays roll in and they find that Smith is hit in line and it's hitting the top of stumps. England have hit the jackpot. They were not too sure about reviewing this but will be delighted now with the outcome. Steven Smith departs amidst a massive roar from the crowd. The replay once again shows that it hit one of the cracks. My number-loving friend pings me that the balls faced by Smith was just four less than the score England managed in their innings. That's a good spot. Australia lead by 157 runs.  560/6

74.4 OUT! After two boundary balls comes a wicket. Ali strikes! This is wonderful bit of off spin. A perfect one to pick up a southpaw. Tossed up around off, Marsh lunges half-forward to defend. The ball spins away just a touch and catches the outside edge of the bat. Root is alert at first slip on this occasion and takes a good catch to his right. Soft dismissal in the end for Marsh, end of a 69-run stand. Australia still 155 runs behind.  248/4

152.2 OUT! Umpire's call. That's cricket for you, my friends. Toiled whole day yesterday without any success and here he is, a wicket off the second ball of the day. James Anderson is looking more relieved than happy. He serves a good length delivery around off and gets it to nip back into the batsman. Marsh is caught back inside the crease as he tries to defend it. But he fails to do so because of the movement and takes a blow on his back pad. Jimmy appeals and the finger goes up. Mitchell Marsh takes the DRS and the replays show that the impact is in line and it's clipping the top of middle stump. The replays also showed that it hit one of the cracks in that area and hence there was extra movement on this one. Marsh returns to the pavilion without adding any run to his overnight score. Australia lead by 146 runs!  549/5

157 OUT! Starc is the sacrificial lamb although he himself is to be blamed! Anderson angled in a fuller ball around middle and leg, Paine tries to flick it again but misses and it goes towards gully off his pads. The bowler is busy appealing as Tim takes a couple of steps forward. Starc takes a start initially in search of a run, but seeing the backward point fielder get to the ball, he stops mid-way. His partner has nowhere to go as he is in the middle of the pitch. Starc realises that he is the one who has to sacrifice and makes sure to cross Paine. Meanwhile, James Vince runs with the ball and takes the bails off at the striker's end. A flurry of wickets here will please England, although they still are behind the eight ball.  561/7

178 OUT! 50th Test wicket for James Anderson in 2017, the third time he has achieved this in a calendar year. No signs of elation from him after getting the umpire's nod on this one. He angles it on a length which is a touch on the fuller side. Cummins looks to clip it away with the angle but misses the cherry completely. The ball catches him plumb in front. On appealing, the umpire gives him the marching orders. However, he opts to review that. There was no inside edge and the three reds on the Ball Tracker sealed it for him. The record 93-run stand is broken finally. This is the highest 8th wicket stand at this venue for Australia and that ends now. The hosts are ahead by one run more than 250.  654/8

179.3 OUT! End of Lyon's (mis)adventure! Full ball around off, he looks to go downtown yet again. All he does is manage to sky it. The ball stays up eternally before coming down in the safe waiting hands of Ali who has moved ahead from mid on to position himself underneath it. 7.3 OUT! Cook's misery continues! Josh Hazlewood is breathing fire at 'The Furnace'! Cook has been guilty of hanging on the back foot and he eventually pays the price for that. Gets a full length delivery on middle, he looks to work it away from the crease. Is a touch early into the shot and ends up getting it close to the edge of the bat back towards the bowler. The speedster is alert and gets low to his right and grabs it inches over the ground with his right hand. This is Cook's 10th Test innings without a fifty, his most barren spell. The tourists have lost both their openers cheaply in pursuit of saving the game. Not at all ideal.  29/2

1.5 OUT! Josh Hazlewood draws first blood! For a change today, this isn't a good wicket that is aided by a crack on the surface. Hazlewood angles this across Stoneman on a length, the English opener has a tame nervous poke at it. That's enough for the ball to grab the outside edge and land in the waiting hands of Paine, who accepts it gleefully. No doubt the ball was good, but the batsman could be faulted here as well. He never got his feet moving - a cardinal sin - as he got stuck inside the crease. When you are so deeply rooted inside, you'd rather not look to hang your bat out like Mark did here. For now, England are rocked back early.  4/1

29.5 OUT! Knocked him over with a jaffa! Ball of the summer, says Mark Taylor on air. Starc angles in from round the wicket and hurls a length ball pitching around middle at 143.9 kmph. The ball pitches and deflects at an angle of 3.9 degrees (as seen in the pitch map later). Vince looks to clip it away with the angle but finds the late movement tough to counter. The ball uproots the off stump and the anguish on Vince's face is telling. Starc, well, he is up and running and just sprints in celebration. On another look, it shows that the crack has a part to play in that deflection. Vince's stay at the crease ends, England still 159 behind.  100/4

14.1 OUT! Steven Smith takes a fantastic reflex catch! Not easy when there is a deflection from the keeper's gloves. Lyon is up and roaring in celebration. England lose their third wicket and trail by 199 runs. A flighted delivery landing full outside off, Root strides forward to drive it through covers but gets a thick outside edge behind. Paine tries catching it but it brushes his gloves and flies behind towards first slip. Steven Smith stationed there initially looks to move to his left but then realizes that it's coming to his right. Immediately shows good reflexes to grab it with his mouth wide open. The Aussies are delighted. They are inching closer to winning the urn after hunting down the opposition captain cheaply, yet again.  60/3

63.2 OUT! That should be the final nail in the coffin for England! On some days, you get belted for runs off the good balls that you deliver and on others, you get rewarded off the not-so-great ones. This is bowled on a length down the leg side, it should have been blasted to the backward square leg fence for a boundary. With that intention in mind, Malan looks to pull it but ends up feathering an edge to Paine behind. The Australians are elated and why not. The urn is just 3 wickets away from returning to their nation. Malan though, he has played well to this point and has to depart without another ton in the game to his name. He looks disappointed for throwing it away here. Hazlewood is just one wicket away from his maiden Ashes fifer.  196/7

39.1 OUT! My word! Hazlewood and Australia are up and running straightaway. The first innings centurion, Bairstow has to depart with an incredulous look on his face. Hazlewood runs in from over the wicket and lands it on a length just outside off. Bairstow looks to play that angle but the ball doesn't come in. It stays a touch low as well and beats the outside of Jonny's bat and disturbs the off stick. The bowler roars in delight and is joined by the WACA crowd. England had to just contend with the crack yesterday and now with some dampness on the surface, this is what happens. The ball didn't get up at all. Australia 5 wickets away from regaining the urn.  133/5

54.5 OUT! No inside edge this time and Ali has to walk back! 5/6 for Nathan Lyon against Moeen Ali in the series. Lyon serves this flighted ball on off and it skids in with the angle, Moeen lunges forward to defend but misses. Like the previous ball, the ball strikes him on the front pad. This time the hosts know they've got their man. They appeal and the dreaded finger is raised. Ali has a chat with his partner and walks off without taking the review. The tourists trail by 87, which is the figure that the Aussies hate. Yet it has favored them at this moment. The hosts are just 4 wickets away from a win. The ball takes the leading edge and goes to gully. Guess who's there - the 31-year old birthday boy Usman Khawaja! He gets down low and catches it with ease before throwing it up in the air in celebration. Josh has an outside chance of getting a 10-fer in this game - he picked 3 in the first innings.  210/8

He moves to the off side and looks to fend it away. All he manages is a tickle to the keeper. And we all know that Broad is not a walker. He waits for the dreaded finger to send him back.
