New Delhi: South Africa made a confident start to their Australian series with Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis taking their team to 255/2 at stumps on Day 1 of the opening Test. A look at the statistical highlights from the day's play.

# Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla have recorded a partnership of 136 (unbroken)  - their eleventh in Tests. Jacques Kallis and Abraham de Villiers hold a South African record by sharing 12 century partnerships in Tests.

# Amla and Kallis have totalled 3607 runs at an average of 66.79 in 58 innings - the highest by a South African pair in Tests, surpassing the 3592 (ave.61.93) by Kallis and de Villiers in 64 innings.

# Hashim Amla (90 not out) has posted his fifth fifty against Australia - his 24th in Tests. The said innings is his highest score in Tests in Australia.

# Amla, in the course of his above innings, has completed his 5000 runs in Tests - 5036 in 63 Tests (109 innings) at an average of 50.86.  He became the seventh South African to achieve the feat.

# Amla's distinction of reaching 5000 runs in 109 innings is the second fastest by a South African in Tests - the quickest being 108 innings taken by Herschelle Gibbs

# Amla's runs' aggregate of 777 in eight Tests at an average of 86.33 is the highest by a South African batsman in Tests this year - the second best overall, behind Michael Clarke's 782 (ave.86.88) in just seven Tests.

# Among the seven South African players with 5,000 runs or more in Tests, Amla is the third after Kallis and Smith to register an average of 50-plus in Tests

# Alviro Petersen (64) has posted his fourth fifty in Tests - his first in his maiden innings against Australia.

# Petersen is averaging 56.58 in Tests in 2012 - his aggregate being 679 in eight Tests, including three hundreds and a fifty.

# Amla and Kallis have added 136 (unbroken) for the third wicket - the highest partnership for any wicket for South Africa against Australia at Brisbane.

# Jacques Kallis' superb unbeaten 84 is his 10th fifty against Australia, extending his record -  1723 runs in 26 Tests at an average of 40.06, including four hundreds.  The said innings is his 56th fifty in Tests.
