Ajay Jadeja hit a valuable 37 to lead Haryana to a 62-run victory at the Buchi Babu cricket tournament in Chennai on Friday. Playing against Hyderabad at the Vivekananda College grounds, the 42-year-old Jadeja was also involved in a 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket with opener Sunny Singh that proved vital in Haryana's success.
Jadeja last played a competitive tournament at Hong Kong International Sixes in 2007 after his last Ranji Trophy exploits representing Rajasthan the same year. His last Ranji game came against Bengal in January 2007.
His latest stint prompted media headlines to tag him as the 'comeback man'. The title has probably not gone down well with the former India middle-order batsman.
"I read somewhere that I am making a comeback. When did I quit to make a comeback? I have been playing for the last 25 years.
"I wanted to have some fun and spend time with the kids and that's why I am playing here. I thoroughly enjoyed my stint in the middle," Jadeja told the New Indian Express in an interview.
Jadeja also went on to praise India's rising stars - Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja.
"When you have a player who plays like (Virender) Sehwag, what else do you want? Openers play an important role in a team's success. When you have a solid opening pair it is half the job done."He (Ravindra Jadeja) has been the biggest plus for the team and played a role in the team's success," he said.
Talking about India's maverick skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Jadeja spoke his heart out saying MSD's temperament is his biggest asset while also mentioning that people are jealous of Dhoni's success.
"What I like most about Dhoni is his temperament. He never gets rattled and is always cool and composed.
"People who doubt his cricketing acumen are jealous of his success. By instinct alone you cannot win so many tournaments. People who are jealous of his success keep talking like that," opined Jadeja.
