Indian Wells:

Martina Hingis won the latest round in a rivalry with Lindsay Davenport that stretches back more than a decade, taking a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory in the Pacific Life Open. On the men's side, No 1 Roger Federer came back after a slow start to beat No 32 Olivier Rochus 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in their third-round match. Federer is the two time defending champion. Also advancing were Tomas Berdych, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over 2002 and 2003 tournament champion and 2005 finalist Lleyton Hewitt; Ivan Ljubicic, with 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils; and Marcos Baghdatis, who beat Gaston Gaudio 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2. The 25-year-old Hingis, playing a full schedule this year for the first time since an injury-plagued 2002 campaign, won for the 11th time in 25 career matches against Davenport. The two former No 1s, who first played each other in 1995, had not met since 2001 until their fourth-round match at Indian Wells. With Davenport having trouble keeping the ball in play early, Hingis won the first set simply by being more consistent with her shots. In the second set, the tide changed, with Davenport's forehands and backhands that had been sailing long and wide suddenly landing just inside the lines. Hingis changed the momentum again quickly in the third set, chasing down almost everything Davenport hit and keeping the ball in play until Davenport eventually made a mistake. Davenport, ranked No 4, finished with 42 unforced errors to only 14 by Hingis, who has climbed to No 32 from 349th when she re-entered the rankings on January 16. (AP)
