Ipoh, Malaysia: Title holders South Korea mauled debutants Oman 10-0 to book a berth in the semifinals of the ninth Asia Cup hockey tournament in Ipoh on Wednesday. Korea will now play Pakistan in the semifinal after India beat Bangladesh 9-1 in the other group B tie to top the points table.
The fancied Koreans, however, were slow to start with as they scored just two goals in the opening half through a penalty corner conversion by Jang Jong Hyun (15th minute) and a fine field effort by Kang Moon Kweon (22nd).
But after the breather, the Koreans changed their gear and looked a completely different side, pumping in as many as eight goals to show supremacy over the lowly Oman.
Yoon Sung Hoon scored two quick goals -- in the 39th and 40th mniute -- to make the scoreline 4-0 in favour of Korea.
Jang Jong Hyun converted his second penalty corner of the day in the 42nd minute before Junag Man Jae scored a field goal eight minutes later.
In the 51st minute, Lee Jung Jun found the back of the net and then an own goal from Oman gave Korea 8-0 lead.
Kang Moon Kweon scored another field goal in the 62nd minute before Jang Jong Hyun was yet again at the thick of things, converting his third short corner of the day just two minutes later to complete the rout.
