Dhaka:A thumb injury is likely to keep Bangladeshi skipper Habibul Bashar from playing in next month's International Cricket Council Champions Trophy in England, officials said today. Bangladesh's most prolific batsman hurt his right thumb during a practice session last week and needs surgery, Bangladesh Cricket Board official Nizamuddin Chowdhury said. "Doctors in Australia have suggested that he needs surgery on his thumb, but we haven't decided where he will get the treatment," Chowdhury said. The cricket board is yet to name a new captain to replace Bashar. "We will decide in the next 24 hours," Chowdhury said. But the local press has speculated that the captaincy may go to vice captain Rajin Saleh, or even to Bashar's predecessor, Khaled Mahmud. National cricket selectors, meanwhile, have recalled left hand batsman Faisal Hossain to take Bashar's place in the 14-member team for the Champions Trophy, which starts September in England, board official Mahbub Anam said. The Bangladesh team - which includes two uncapped players - is scheduled to leave for England on Thursday, and is likely to play some practice matches against Scotland and Ireland, chief selector Faruq Ahmed said earlier. Bashar, a 32-year-old right-handed batsman, has led Bangladesh since January. The impending surgery may keep Bashar out of the game for a few weeks, but he is likely to rejoin the team in time for a busy home schedule this winter - against New Zealand, India, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
