Linares, Spain:

World champion Viswanathan Anand played his fifth draw on the trot and remained in joint third spot after the end of the 11th round of Magistral Ciudad De Linares chess tournament on Wednesday.

Anand could not break the defenses of Wang Yue who played white and took his points tally to 5.5 out of a possible 11.

Playing black against Wang Yue, Anand stuck to his pet Nimzo Indian and did not face much difficulty in maintaining the balance.

The Chinese went for a topical structure and after accurate play by both sides a closed position was reached with just one open file and little action available for both players.

Anand proposed the draw after making his 27th move which was immediately accepted.

With just three rounds to come after the final rest day on Wednesday it is a now or never situation for Anand and if the Indian ace has to catch up with Grischuk, he will have to strike immediately.

Draws was the order of the as none of the four games could produce a decisive result leaving the standings intact as they were after the end of the 10th round.

Alexander Grischuk played out a draw with Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan to retain his full point lead over Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine who signed peace with Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

With Grischuk on seven points and Ivanchuk a full point behind, the trio of Anand, Carlsen and Armenian Levon Aronian stand joint third on 5.5 points each.

The sixth place is shared by Wang Yue and Radjabov on 5 points apiece while debutant Cuban Lenier Dominguez stands at the bottom another half point adrift.

It was a difficult game wherein Radjabov kept his cool against Grischuk. Playing the black side of a Bayonet attack in the King's Indian defense, Radjabov showed his skills in holding the black side together and reached an opposite colour Bishops endgame after a lot of pieces changed hands.

The draw was agreed to after 44 moves.

The shortest game of the day was between Ivanchuk and Carlsen. The Ukrainian employed the queen pawn opening and faced the age-old Lasker set up. Not having any new idea up his sleeves Ivanchuk took the draw vide repetition in just 22 moves.

Levon Aronian tried hard but an alert Dominguez kept him at bay in the Ruy Lopez opening. After a closely fought middle game the players reached a rook and pawns ending where Aronian had an extra pawn but Dominguez had adequate defenses.

The game was drawn when Dominguez spotted a regulation Stalemate and sacrificed his rook.
