French Open champion Rafael Nadal came through a tricky match against American Mardy Fish to advance to the second round, the 2006 finalist winning in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

England's Tim Henman though didn't have such an easy time. A four-time semi-finalist at the All England Club, he needed a five set win to get past Carlos Moya. Henman won the match 13-11 in the final set.

Meanwhile in the women's draw 2004 champion Maria Sharapova overcame some stiff resistance in the second set from Yung-Jan Chan from Taiwan. The second seed held on in the end to win the match in an hour and 28 minutes 6-1, 7-5.

Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo also advanced with a straight sets win.
