IPL 2025 retention laws has thrown up some interesting auction dynamics, with franchises being allowed to retain a maximum of 6 players.

The franchises, however, must retain one uncapped player, if they choose to keep all six.

Retention 1: Rs 18 crore
Retention 2: Rs 14 crore
Retention 3: Rs 11 crore
Retention 4: Rs 18 crore
Retention 5: Rs 14 crore
Uncapped: Rs 4 crore

This means, if a franchise retains only three players, then that would deduct Rs 18 cr, Rs 14 cr and Rs 11 cr, respectively before the mega auction.

If a franchise retains four players, they would be deducted Rs 18 cr, Rs 14 cr, Rs 11 cr and then Rs 18 cr again.

Retaining all six would include a total deduction of Rs 79 crore, leaving the team with just Rs 41 crore for the mega auction.

The first retention will have to be Rs 18 crore, while two retentions would have to be Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore.

A franchise can choose to retain no players and enter the auction with six Right to Match (RTM) cards. In that case, their total budget will be Rs 120 crore.
