Stuttgart: Russia's Mikhail Youzhny charged back from 1-4 down in the final set Sunday to defeat Argentina's Guillermo Canas and capture his first career title at the Mercedes Cup. The 20-year-old, regarded by many as a future top player, won a three-hour struggle as he downed the No. 3 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to take home $64,850 at the clay court event. A drop shot from the back line ignited Youzhny's comeback, setting up the first break when he trailed in the final set. He then sealed the win on his second match point, blasting a powerful forehand into the open court after a weak service return by Canas. Youzhny was playing his first final of his three-year career at the $500,000 event. His best previous performances this year were two semifinals at Casablanca and Munich. Canas, a French Open quarterfinalist, came up short for the second straight year after losing last year's final to Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten. Canas earned $38,100 for his effort. (AP)
