Mikhail Youzhny needed only a few minutes on Tuesday to reach the second round of the French Open.

The 13th-seeded Russian played only nine points in the first game of the first set before Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic retired with a back injury.

Youzhny, a US Open semifinalist last year, was relieved to spend so little time on court - because he also has a sore back, too.

"I really wanted to play today, actually. But I have a little pain in my back, so one more day rest is good," said Youzhny, who has reached three finals this year. "After Hamburg, I only practiced, so I think one more day for my back is good."

Hernych had the back problem before the tournament.

"I started feeling it two or three days ago," Hernych said. "It wasn't that painful, so I went to the court and tried to play. I felt I could play. But after the fourth or fifth point it started hurting and I couldn't do anything."

The 24-year-old Youzhny has never got beyond the third round at Roland Garros. He next plays Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador.

Lapentti was leading Alexander Peya 6-1, 6-4, 2-1 when the Austrian retired because of digestive problems.
