Venus Williams pulls out of the German Open final because of an ankle injury, and delivers the title to Amelie Mauresmo.

Berlin:

Venus Williams pulled out of the German Open final today because of an ankle injury, delivering the title to Amelie Mauresmo. Williams twisted her ankle while avoiding an upset against Croatian teenager Karolina Sprem in yesterday's semifinal and said the injury could force her out of the final. Sprem was up 3-0 in the final set before Williams rallied to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the USD 1.3 million clay-court event, a major tuneup for the French Open. The American wore a tape on the left ankle after twisting it in the final game against the 19-year-old Croatian. Williams had won her last two tournaments and was riding a 15-match winning streak. The woman's tour has been hit by a rash of injuries to its top players. Kim Clijsters, No. 2 in the world, will be forced to skip the French Open after pulling out of a third-round match at the German Open with a recurring wrist injury. Mauresmo, seeded second, needed only 52 minutes to rout Jennifer Capriati 6-2, 6-0 in the other semifinal. (AP)
