Berlin :

Venus Williams overwhelmed Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi 6-3, 6-1 in the third round of the German Open, showing the full range of her power game. Williams ran her winning streak to 13 straight as she slammed winners all over the court and landed her big first serve against the 16th-seeded Israeli at the US $1.3 million event, a major tune up for the French Open. "I felt good today. That's my game," said the third-seeded Williams. "I definitely needed to control the match." Meanwhile, top-seeded Kim Clijsters pulled out of her third-round match with a recurring wrist injury, jeopardising her chances of playing the French Open later this month. She was coming off a six-week layoff because of the injury. "I hope I can play the French, I don't know. It's a 50-50 chance," said Clijsters, the No. 2 in the world. Other top seeds like Jennifer Capriati also moved to the next round of the tournament. (AP)
