US win doubles by retirement

San Diego: The United States led Romania 2-1 in their Davis Cup World Group tie after winning the doubles on Saturday, when Victor Hanescu retired with torn ligaments in his ribcage.Bryan twins Bob and Mike were leading Hanescu and Horia-Vlad Tecau 6-2 when Hanescu quit.Hanescu hurt his left side while serving. He took a timeout at deuce in the seventh game and the Bryans ahead 4-2.In obvious pain, Hanescu served out and lost the game. In the next, after hitting a hard forehand to win the first point, he cringed and dropped to his knees. He finished that game, won by the Bryans to take the set 6-2, but could play no more."I felt pain on the left side, a very sharp and strong pain," Hanescu said. "At the beginning I thought it was something easier, but after the second serve, I understood that it's something really bad because it was painful".The injury-shortened doubles came a day after Andy Roddick grew nauseated during his match and was beaten by Romania's Andrei Pavel in five sets. The Bryan twins, Australian Open doubles champions and ranked No. 1, broke service in the first game against the Romanian duo and seemed in control even before Hanescu's injury became evident.
