Stockholm:

Tommy Haas defeated Albert Montanes of Spain 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open.

Fifth-seeded Juan Monaco also reached the last eight, beating Swedish qualifier Filip Prpic 6-4, 6-4 and will meet Haas in Friday's quarters.

After splitting the first two sets, Haas broke Montanes' serve at love to lead 3-1 and then held his serve the rest of the way.

"I was lucky to get the early break in the third set," Haas said. "Overall, I'm pleased with the way I've been hitting the ball. So if I can just keep it in between the lines that will help."

Haas, seeded fourth, is playing for the fourth time at the Royal Tennis Hall. His best result came in 2004 when he lost to Andre Agassi in the semifinals.

Joachim Johansson, playing his first ATP Tour match since the Australian Open in January, beat Carlos Berloq 7-6 (1), 6-2. Michael Ryderstedt defeated retiring Kenneth Carlsen 6-3, 7-6 (4); Michael Llodra topped Denis Gremelmayr, Germany, 6-3, 6-2; and Arnaud Clement ousted Max Mirnyi 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

In other first-round action, Bjorn Rehnquist upset Vince Spadea 6-4, 6-4, Peter Luczak rallied to beat Benjamin Becker 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Frank Dancevic defeated Peter Wessels 6-1, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (6),

Rehnquist, who lost in qualifying last weekend but entered the tournament as a lucky loser, was told by organizers only 30 minutes before the match that he would play for Fernando Verdasco, who withdrew because of injury.

Ranked 306th, the 1996 Australian Open junior champion had won only one previous match on the ATP tour.
