Seville:
Carlos Moya defeated Andy Roddick in straight sets in Seville on Sunday to win the Davis Cup for Spain. Moya's 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5) victory over the American number one, ensured the home team held an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five final on clay. Spain led 2-1 overnight in this best-of-five Davis Cup Final, and Andy Roddick knew he had to beat Carlos Moya to keep American hopes alive. Roddick, however, had lost his first singles match on Friday to 18-year-old Rafael Nadal and did not look at his best. 27,000 fans packed the stadium in Seville for the final day of the three-day competition. Though Roddick seemed in determined mood - he hadn't counted on Moya playing what many regarded afterwards as the best match of his life. Steady groundstrokes The Spaniard had lost three times before to Roddick but this time around his steady groundstrokes kept Roddick at bay. He broke the American's serve in the opening game to take the advantage early on. He then raced into a three-love lead and was soon taking the first set in just 36 minutes. Roddick held on in the second set and managed to break Moya's serve to lead 3-1. However, the Spaniard broke right back - thanks mainly to two double faults from Roddick. The American was making mistakes - losing a break point in the eighth game that could have put him back in the match. The set did go to a tie-break but Moya closed it out by seven points to one when Roddick hit a backhand into the net. The third set was tight and the American was playing well - but simply could not match his Spanish opponent. This set also went to the tie-break. Straight sets win Moya raced ahead for a 6-3 lead but then Roddick took the next two points. However, those were to be his last points of the match as Moya closed him out to take the match in straight sets. This victory handed Spain their second Davis Cup crown, following their success in 2000. Prince Felipe leapt off his chair with a two-fisted salute to celebrate - whilst the Seville crowd went wild. The final singles rubber went the way of the US, with Mardy Fish defeating Tommy Robredo in straight sets, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2. But the result was of little consequence as Spain had already won the Cup.
