Spain defeated Germany 2-1 and the Czech Republic beat Belgium by the same score in round-robin play at the Arag World Team Cup on Wednesday.

Spain defeated Germany 2-1 and the Czech Republic beat Belgium by the same score in round-robin play at the Arag World Team Cup on Wednesday.

David Ferrer put Spain ahead against Germany by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5, and Nicolas Almagro defeated Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-4 to secure victory. Germany won the doubles with Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske beating Almagro and Bartolomeu Salva-Vidal 7-6 (3), 6-3.

The Czech Republic made a perfect start against Belgium when Tomas Berdych took just 56 minutes to overwhelm Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-0. Jan Hajek then withstood a strong challenge from Kristof Vliegen to win 7-6 (7), 6-4 before Rochus and Steve Darcis earned a consolation 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over Berdych and Martin Damm.

Earlier, Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson of Sweden defeated Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu of Chile 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Chile carried a winning 2-0 lead from the previous day.

The eight-nation field is split into two groups, with the winners of each advancing to Saturday's final. Argentina, Chile, Sweden and the United States are in the Red Group, with Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany and Spain in the Blue Group.

The United States plays its final round-robin match on Thursday against Sweden, while Argentina faces Chile. Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic play on Friday to determine who will qualify from the Blue Group. Belgium is already eliminated.
