Kaohsiung:

A young an energetic Somdev Devvarman plotted the fall of an experienced Lu Yen-Hsun by engaging him in long and high rallies, said India's Davis Cup captain S P Misra.

Somdev delomished the world number 59 opponent from Chinese Taipei 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 to guide India to the final round of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I competition here today. Riding on Somdev's victory, India beat Chinese Taipei 3-2 in the second round tie.

"This was one of the best Davis Cup ties I have seen in the recent times. It was a good game plan. The idea was to play Lu in long and high rallies and it paid off.

"Somdev was playing on higher altitude also and Lu exerted himself in the second set and from there on we were confident of his win," Misra said after the tie.

Misra though admitted they did not expect such an easy win for Somdev.

"Playing against the crowd favourite and number one player of the hosts and in an alive tie is not easy. We expected Somdev to fight hard but never though it would be that easy win," he said.

"Somdev's preparation was top class and he kept a lot of balls into play and succeeded," Misra added. The non-playing captain also described victory in the away-tie as satisfying.

"It was a splendid day. Very, very satisfying. It's a wonderful team achievement. Players were backing each other and the team spirit was brilliant. It was a good team effort," Misra said.

India will next play either Australia or Thailand at home and Misra feels, "We have to find a proper venue because of the Lok Sabha elections."

Misra also refuted suggestions that Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi struggled against a young combination of Chu-Huan Yi and Tsun-Hua Yang on Saturday before pulling it off in a four-setter.

"Not really. They young guys played too many shots and they were lucky to get those points. Yes Lee-Hesh were a bit relaxed in the third set (which they lost) but closed it (match) brilliantly," he said.
