London: The ladies final at Wimbledon today will have 17 year old finalist Maria Sharapova taking on Serena Williams. Serena is attempting to become the first woman since Steffi Graf to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles, while Sharapova is hoping to become the second youngest player to win after Martina Hingis. Known as the Siberian shrieker for her loud grunts, Sharapova's trained at the Nick Bollieteri academy since she was 9. She now has a world ranking of 15 and though the world thinks of her as being another glamour girl like Anna Kournikova, Maria Sharapova has already achieved a lot more than her Russian compatriot. Sharapova's semi-final win over Lindsay Davenport was a fighting effort after she was a set down. However the girl who was spotted by Martina Navratilova in a Moscow clinic when she was 5, knows about commitment. Her parents lived apart for 2 years so that she could move to the US at the age of 7. The 17 year old already has a few WTA titles to her name - the latest was the DFS grass court title just before Wimbledon. She has a powerful serve and groundstrokes and is said to be amazingly fit. Serena Williams meanwhile, had a tough win over Amelie Mauresmo and is still not at the top of her game. A fact that means that Sharapova might well have a chance. Saturday's final will also be a whole new experiecne for Serena. The last time she faced an opponent other than her sister at a Grand Slam final was in 1999 at the US Open. Her next 5 titles all came with wins over Venus.
