Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova crashed out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Thursday.

Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova crashed out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Thursday. Sharapova, the sixth seed won the opening set against fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-4, but the 17-year-old sensation could not maintain her momentum. The 10th-seeded Zvonareva moved into the quarter-finals by winning the next two sets for a 4-6 6-4 6-4 victory and next plays 16-year-old Tatiana Golovin of France for a place in the semi-finals. Mauresmo, Capriati advance Second seed Amelie Mauresmo of France won the opening set of her third round match 6-2 against Elena Bovina of Russia, but the 14th seed bounced back to level the match by taking the second set 6-3. However, the 2002 champion and highest ranked player in the tournament advanced to a quarter-final against Karolina Sprem of Croatia, by dropping only two games in the deciding set for a 6-2 3-6 6-2 victory. Jennifer Capriati of the United States, the fifth seed, defeated Mary Pierce of France 6-2 6-4 much to the disappointment of the locals. The Montreal-born Pierce was a fan's favourite all week. Capriati next meets unseeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva who upset 11th seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-2 6-3 to advance to the last eight. French Open champion and third seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia easily defeated 15th seeded Chanda Rubin of the United States 6-4 6-0 and now meets 13th seed Ma gdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, who ousted 9th seed Paola Suarez of Argentina 6-4, 6-3.
