Another win by Maria Sharapova at the Qatar Total German Open on Thursday moved the Russian closer to the top ranking. Sharapova needed just 57 minutes to roll past China's Shuai Peng 6-2, 6-1 and reach the quarterfinals in her bid to dislodge Lindsay Davenport. Kim Clijsters was forced to retire from her match against Patty Schnyder because of a right knee injury. Clijsters retired while leading 7-6 (4), 5-6 at the $1.3 million event, a key tuneup for the French Open starting on May 23. Also through is second seed Amelie Mauresmo who beat French compatriot Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-2. (AP)
