Serena Williams has entered a lower-tier, $170,000 tennis tournament on the island state of Tasmania to help her prepare for next year's Australian Open. Williams, who has played only seven tournaments in 2006 because of a lingering left knee injury, has entered the Moorilla Hobart International, to be played at the 1,500-seat Domain Tennis Centre from January 7-12. The Hobart International is a 32-player Tier IV event, among the lowest-ranked tournaments on the WTA Tour. The Australian Open begins on January 15th in Melbourne. "Serena will be arguably the highest profile athlete in the world from any sport to compete in Tasmania and we are thrilled that she has chosen to play," said tournament director Michael Roberts. Williams, a former No 1 and seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, did not play in this year's French Open and Wimbledon. She lost in the third round at the Australian Open and the fourth round at the U.S. Open. Her ranking has dropped to No. 95. (AP)
