Beijing:

Top seed Serena Williams is through to the quarterfinals of the China Open following a 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory over Dinara Safina of Russia. The American dominated the first set with some blistering groundstrokes and took it 6-4. But Dinars Safina fought back in the second set. The Russian twice broke her opponent's serve to take the second set 3-6. Williams however was back in control in the decider as Safina crumbled with a number of double-faults including one that put her behind 5-3. Williams went on to serve out the match, sealing the victory with an ace. The American is joined in the last eight by Maria Sharapova, the woman who beat her to take the Wimbledon title in July. Sharapova was knocked out of the doubles competition on Tuesday but there was no sign in her singles match that that result had dented her confidence. (AP)
