Serena qualifies for WTA Championships

Serena Williams has qualified for next month's WTA Championships.

Serena Williams has qualified for next month's WTA Championships.

Williams, the Australian Open champion who is playing at the Zurich Open this week, is the fifth player to qualify for the tournament in Madrid, Spain. Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic have also qualified.

The year-end championships feature the season's top eight singles players, and at least six other players are still eligible for the remaining three spots at the Nov 6-11 tournament.

Williams, who withdrew from the last two tournaments in Zurich, is scheduled to play her opening match against Patty Schnyder on Tuesday.
