Zurich:

Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza crashed out in the first round of the Zurich Open on Monday.

Sania was playing wildcard Michaella Kracijek of the Netherlands, who is ranked three places below her.

The world number 33 beat Mirza 6-1, 6-4 to move into round two of the Tier 1 event.

Sania had a disappointing outing in the Kremlin Cup last week. There too she had a first round exit to Gisela Dulko.

In other results at the Zurich Open, Tatiana Golovin beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-3, 6-4 Monday.

The 19-year-old Frenchwoman, who won her first two WTA Tour titles this season, will next face fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic. Golovin lost to the Serb in the opening round in both 2004 and 2005.

Nicole Vaidisova also advanced, using 11 aces to post a 6-4, 6-2 win over Katarina Srebotnik, who committed six double-faults and failed to convert two break points.

The Czech teenager will play US Open semifinalist Jelena Jankovic in the next round.

Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko disappointed Swiss fans when she beat Timea Bacsinszky 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament's seeded players begin on Tuesday with Australian Open champion Serena Williams facing Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

Seven of the world's top 10 players are at the tournament, including No 1 Justine Henin, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo.

Defending champion Maria Sharapova withdrew on Saturday because of a lingering right-shoulder injury. Martina Hingis pulled out with a hip problem. (With AP inputs)
