Australian Open champion Marat Safin has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup mixed team tennis tournament due to a persistent knee problem.

Marat Safin has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup mixed team tennis tournament due to a persistent knee problem.He has been replaced in the Russian team by 20-year-old Teimuraz Gabashvili, who will now partner Svetlana Kuznetsova.The Australian Open champion has struggled with tendinitis in his right knee and missed the Paris Masters and season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai in November.The Hopman Cup begins on Friday with a qualifying match between China and the Netherlands.Russia is in Group A with the United States, Sweden and Serbia-Montenegro.
