Safin reaches Cincinnati Masters quarter-final

Cincinnati, Ohio:

Fourth seed Marat Safin cruised into the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters on Thursday, with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty. Third seed Lleyton Hewitt also progressed in comfortable fashion, brushing aside Croatia's Mario Ancic 6-1, 6-4, while Russia's Mikhail Youzhny booked his place in the last eight with victory in three sets over Gael Monfils of France. The ATP Tour's Cincinnati Masters continued in Ohio on Thursday.Playing his first tournament since Wimbledon, Australian Open champion Marat Safin had taken three sets to make it past British wildcard Andy Murray on Wednesday. But yesterday the Russian was back to his very best as he swept aside Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) to book a quarter-final place against the USA's Robby Ginepri. Hrbaty held a 7-6 advantage in their head-to-heads coming into the match, but Safin - who is seeded fourth for the tournament - assumed complete control after holding serve in a tight first game. Hewitt beats AncicLike Safin, Lleyton Hewitt has also just returned to action after a period on the sidelines. The Australian retired from his first round match in Montreal last week with a virus, but seems to be getting back to full fitness. The third seed struggled past Greg Rusedski in three sets on Wednesday, but looked close to his best as he eased past Croatia's Mario Ancic on Thursday to secure a place in the last eight. He raced to a 5-0 lead, and took the first set 6-1. One break of serve in the second set was enough for victory. The final score was 6-1, 6-3.After the match, Hewitt said that he was happy with his form."Yeah, absolutely. I've really stepped it up a notch, I think, today, and I probably had to against Ancic. He's a very dangerous 'floater' in the draw, and it was good to get off to a good start out there, and not make a lot of unforced errors, and really put the pressure back on him," Hewitt said. Also on Thursday, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny defeated the young Frenchman Gael Monfils in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
