New York: Former US Open champion Marat Safin of Russia has withdrawn from the final Grand Slam tournament of the year due to a wrist injury. Guillermo Canas of Argentina also withdrew following wrist surgery. Canas was to play third seed Juan Carlos Ferrero - the French Open champion - in the first round. The US Open gets underway at the National Tennis Centre on Monday. Safin would have been the 26th seed, but he hasn't played in more than a month because of the injury. The 23-year-old Russian has appeared in only nine tournaments this season, posting a 12-7 match record. Safin claimed his only Grand Slam title at the 2000 US Open, defeating Pete Sampras in straight sets in the final. He reached the semi-finals in 2001. Canas has appeared in only two events this year, none since the Australian Open. (PTI)
